Jean (Jane) Black
« on: Sunday 20 May 18 12:23 BST (UK) »
Looking for birth/death of Jean (Jane) Black.  She married Peter Milne in 1791 at Longside and they had 4 children Peter (1794-1872), James (1802-1886), John (1807-1881) and Jane (1818-).  I have no idea who her parents were, can anyone help please?  Thanks.

There are 12 Jean Blacks in the OPR for Aberdeen born between 1762 and 1775. None are in Longside. The closest 4 geographically with the most likely age are 1. daughter of James , b. 12/13/1767 in Ellon; 2. daughter of Robert Black and Jean Knox, b.8/31/1772 in Foveran; 3. daughter of  WILLIAM BLACK/BARBARA LUCAS b.1/8/1765 in Foveran, and finally daughter of George Black b. 3/28/1771 in Old Meldrum. Obviously without some other corroborating evidence these will all be just guesses, but at least you have some ideas to work with. The scarcity of records from that era may make it impossible to ever know for sure. But I would start with checking names of children and seeing if any match up with traditional naming conventions. I have found that the majority of Scots from that period did stick to the traditions of naming, i.e first son after fathers father, etc. Other than that if there are witnesses listed for the marriage/births of children that may help. You may get lucky and find a DC in the SR if either Jane or Peter Milne lived until after 1855. Good luck!

Thank you Fogmoose will check those out :).  The marriage of Jean and Peter holds little clues it says Peter Milne and Jane Black both in this parish and settled in Peterhead.  First son was called Peter,  2nd born was called James, 3rd John and then daughter Jane.  So maybe her dad was called James?

There are 3 Births in OPR of children named Black in Longside between 1765- 1785. William b. 1772 son of Adam and Mary b. 1769 fathers name also Adam Black. Then there is John b. 1780 to a William Black. So those are probably more likely to be possible fathers of Jean/Jane and they just didn't bother to record it. Especially since you have a William and an Adam as witnesses at the first-born son's Baptism. Of course they could be Uncles (brothers of Jean) as well. But you're making progress!

Adam Black married Jean Sangster in Aberdeen in 1761. And William Black married BARBARA LUCAS 1764 in Foveran. So most likely too old to be brothers to Jean... Could be the ones you want.

George Black from Old Meldrum had children William 1759, Adam 1766 and Jean 1771, going down that route at minute to see if it is them!

That looks promising, hopefully George's wife is mentioned in one of the siblings births. Maybe they didn't like the name George when naming the kids if indeed he is Jean's father.
