GRO Online Index

Commerford - William Matthew Charles Steward - mothers maiden surname Lock
GRO Reference: 1888  S Quarter in Brentford  Volume 03A  Page 57

He was William and in Hussars 1911 - Perhaps he preferred to go by the name Charles  ???
Doesn't answer why he would die in France and be buried in Germany though. :-\

The GRO index uses the spelling COMERFORD, same as CWGC.

His regiment, 19th Hussars, were based in Germany in early 1919 as part of the British Army of Occupation. Like many other soldiers at that time he died of flu and was buried in Cologne. The later reference to France might well be a clerical error. Yes, a death certificate is available for him from GRO but in a certified army format: 1919 Volume c2 Page 104.
