Places in Will of Thomas Keene
« on: Tuesday 22 May 18 00:38 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone here can help me with some place names in this extract from the Will of Thomas Keene of Wroughton, Wiltshire (dated 1686).

In the first and second line there is a reference to land at what looks like "Eaton ____ als Church Eaton" Can anyone confirm what this place is called and is there a place called Church Eaton?

In the third and fourth line there is what look like a reference to land in "Dounton". Can anyone confirm the place name and where it is?

Any help would be appreciated.

Matt

http://www.twhc.org.uk/book/Wiltshire%20Notes%20and%20Queries%20Vol%202.pdf
has in the index to place names (p692) Church Eaton or Eaton Kennell.... see also Yatton Keynell. (the relevant pages don't have information helpful to your search).

http://www.oodwooc.co.uk/ph_yattonk_tr1.htm has:
Notes to the above text, by John Jackson
[1]  The true name of this parish is Eaton:   Kaynel being that of a family to whom it anciently belonged.  The inhabitants commonly called it Yatton:   except when they wish to distinguish the main village from a hamlet within it called West Yatton:  and then they recur to the original word, calling the former, Church Eaton.

The name at the end of the first line is probably Eaton Kinol.

According to the AA Route Planner http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp Yatton Keynell is near Chippenham about 13 miles by modern road from Bath.

Might the other place name be Taunton?

Interesting find, Philip.

I have the first mention as:  Eaton Chinol

The other place is:  dounton

Why not Downton near Salisbury?

ADDED:

Yatton Keynell fits with:  ...the House being called by the name of the ffolly neare Bathe...

ADDED 2:

In relation to the land at dounton, he says it is:

...in the possession of Merrick Goyles which is now in Controvercie...

Why not Downton near Salisbury?

In relation to the land at dounton, he says it is: in the possession of Merrick Goyles which is now in Controvercie

On looking again, I believe it is dounton
familysearch has a baptism for Mericke GILLES in Downton, Wiltshire on 2 Sep 1667 with parents Mericke and Elizabeth which would support this.
