1830s Will John LANHAM
« on: Wednesday 23 May 18 17:45 BST (UK) »
An extract from the Will of John LANHAM, who was a grocer & banker of Oxford, formerly of Horsham.  He died 1834 and probate seems to have been granted the following year.

I'm trying to decipher the names, occupations and places.  It seems that the primary beneficiary was his little granddaughter Susanna but is her surname MASTERS?  With DoB given she should be easy to trace - not a chance!

Thanks in anticipation

Jane :-)

Yes, although it's most likely spelt Mastors.

He is of Oxford and a Grocer.

ADDED:

Grandsons:

Richard [Staines?] Grinsted of Oxford Grocer

John Grinsted of Oxford Chemist and Druggist

Strangely, I'm finding it less difficult on a tablet in front of the tv than on my big desktop screen with no distractions ???

There seem to also be a couple of grandsons (brothers), any suggestions on their names?

I now think it is:

Richard Haines Grinsted

It is Haines.  See:

However, my Google of the name also turned up this:

Thank you.  Grinsted tallies with known descendants, Masters or Mastors doesn't.  Several anc trees have some unusual name beginning Mas... (Offhand can't think of it, possibly Masford) as a husband for one of the deceased's daughters, no marriage info but there is an Oxford bap of an 1830 child to parents Wm & Susanna so I imagine that's the one and only source.  Perhaps tomorrow I'll hunt for other children of the marriage to see what different spellings emerge.

The implication of the Will is that little Susanna's mother was dead when it was drawn up so no chance of finding younger siblings on GRO website.

so embarrassed, I had no recollection of already having asked the same question.  I'll close this thread.
