Finding great grandmother
« on: Wednesday 23 May 18 18:21 BST (UK) »
Good evening everyone
So I have fallen down the family history rabbit hole and it’s wonderful

I have done quite well but am finding it hard to trace the place of birth for my great grandmother

I have found her marriage & death certificate locally (and have ordered) but I am thinking she wasn’t born in Kent

Is there another line of searching I can take or do I need to wait for her certificates

Many thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, it might help us to help you, if you give the name of the lady and any further details of her?

More than happy to provide that  :)

This is all from my online research as no one has any family details sadly

So her name was Frances Mary Stanley
Married in 1931 in Medway

To Walter C Firth

She died in Maidstone kent age 39 as Frances M Firth

She was 37 (not 39) when she died in Mar.1939 so bc.1901/2.   The only birth index details that fit show a Frances Mary Stanley birth reg'd Sept.1901 Basford, Notts.  GRO own index shows mmn is Martin.

Think she was the daughter of a John Stanley and Martha Elizabeth Martin.

However, the marriage certificate will confirm her fathers name so hopefully this is her.

Once you obtain a marriage certificate it will give you her father's name -- however there was a Frances Mary Stanley born Q/E Sept 1901 in Basford Reg District in Nottinghamshire. This may be her.

In 1911 there is a Frances Stanley aged 9, born Nottinghamshire living in Bentley, Doncaster with her family - parents are John and Alice. However it would be safer to obtain her marriage cert first.

(Annette you beat me to it -- but just confirming my finding and thoughts are same as yours!)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thank you so much

It’s so interesting isn’t it according to the details I have found online my great grandfather was born in Liverpool
So neither were from Kent yet they married and They had two children in Kent (my grandmother) and her sister

Interestingly my research and shown my great grandfather lived in Staffordshire when he died

Looks like there was a son too - Walter G. Stanley mmn Stanley birth Sept.1932 Medway.

Looks like Walter C. Firth swiftly remarried after Frances' death to a Jessie Groundsell in Sept.1939 Medway.

If the Frances Mary Stanley born 1901 is the correct one her mother died in 1907 and her father John remarried to an Alice A. Banner Sept.1910 Basford which explains why wife is 'Alice' on 1911 census as already mentioned.
