Richard & Sarah Rowley
« on: Thursday 24 May 18 16:28 BST (UK) »
Frederic William Rowley was born in Cambridge 27th March 1814 to Richard and Sarah Rowley. He had a brother Stephen, born 1810.

A Richard Rowley died in Cambridge 1831 (b 1777). Sarah Rowley (1775) was living with her son Stephen in Cambridge in 1851. Died 1854

Can anyone see the marriage between Richard and Sarah?

In 1851 Sarah and Stephen name  Hertfordshire as their birthplace. Gorsmore for Sarah, and Tewin for Stephen.

Children born to Richard and Sarah Rowley and baptised in Hertfordshire are:

Mary 18 April 1798 at Little Wymondley
Sarah 19 May 1799 at Little Wymondley
Smith 15 September 1800 at Little Wymondley
John 8 July 1802 at Little Wymondley

The register at Little Wymondley records that Richard is a farmer

Eliza 31 October 1805 at Tewin (born 15 August 1805)
Jacob Smith 30 March 1807 at Tewin (born December 1806 - no exact date given)
Richard 22 December 1808 at Tewin (born 29 August 1808)
Stephen 12 April 1810 at Tewin (born 9 March 1810)

Richard Rowley s/o Stephen and Mary was baptised at Little Wymondley 9 March 1777.

Stephen Rowley married Mary Smith after banns at Little Wymondley 8 June 1772

Thank you for looking. It's odd that with all those baptisms registered there is still no sign of a marriage.

There doesn't seem to be a  marriage anywhere in Hertfordshire, or London (which would be the next most likely place), but I'm not sure whether all London registers are currently online.

Gosmore is a hamlet in the parish of Ippollitts/St Ippolyts, so a search for baptisms of Sarahs at Ippollitts in 1775 shows Sarah Woodward d/o John and Mary 23 April, and Sarah Whitney d/o John and Ann 19 March.  There is also a Sarah Warman d/o John and Elizabeth baptised 19 March 1774.

None of these were buried at Ippollitts during the following 20 years. Nor did any of them marry there between the years 1790-1810.

Sarah Whitney may be of interest, as it is possible that Richard Rowley's father Stephen married her mother Ann at Hitchin on 18 March 1796.  Stephen Rowley is of Little Wymondley, widower. Ann is otp, widow.
Stephen Rowley aged 71 was buried at Little Wymondley in 1822.
Ann Rowley aged 88 was buried at Ippollits in 1838, her abode given as Hitchin.

There was an online index of Hertfordshire wills which FindMyPast linked to which doesn't seem to be there today, but it listed an 1838 will for Ann Rowley.  If you can obtain a copy this may be of help, if she mentioned her daughter Sarah.

On balance, if I was putting money on it, I would take your suggestion and go for Sarah Whitney.

I found Mary Rowley died 1794 . Little Wymondley . (spouse Stephen)
Two years later he marries Ann Whitney (poss mother of Sarah).

So, it is strange that Richard's dad and Sarah's mom marry in church (2nd time round) but there is not a sign anywhere of a marriage for Richard and Sarah. Maybe they just didn't marry.

Thanks again for looking.
