US naturalization record index question?
« on: Thursday 24 May 18 19:46 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am doing genealogy research for my girlfriend and I can't seem to find the record for this immigration. On the US Naturalization Record Index for 1791 - 1992 I found her ancestor Joseph Moulin. It says the certificate number is on Volume 1-P-338. I tried searching Volume 1 on page 338 and nothing shows. Am I looking in the wrong area? No one has yet to figure out Joseph Moulin's parents names. He was born in England from 1807 - 1812 depending on which records you look at. I am hoping maybe his naturalization record might list them or give a better direction on where to search.

No answers yet, just a few questions:

Which website is the Naturalisation Index on?
Do you know where Joseph lived in the USA?
Did Joseph marry?  If so, what was his wife's name? (There might be helpful info on the marriage document).

He lived in Iowa and South Dakota. He died in Iowa. His wife was Sarah Goudy. Its for the Iowa courts. The naturalization record is on Ancestry.com

I was hoping I could find parents' names on a free site (no luck yet).
According to familysearch:
Linn Grove Township, Linn, Iowa, marriage 1 Jan 1846 Joseph Molina to Sarah GOUDY
but the record is on microfilm, not viewable on the website.

https://www.findmypast.com/search/results?datasetname=united+states+marriages
has the marriage record, but I don't have a subscription to view it!

Not sure if naturalization was granted - there is no date and just card to view - most of the boxes just have an 'X' in them whereas if you look at others cards they have birth dates, etc. added.

It is very unlikely that the naturalization record at that time would give parents names.

Before 1906, naturalization records may contain:

Port of arrival - Date of arrival - Age of immigrant
Residence of immigrant - Country of origin or allegiance

So it seems the marriage Linn Grove Township, Linn, Iowa, marriage 1 Jan 1846 Joseph MOLINA to Sarah GOUDY (on F1ndMyPest) might be the best to check.

Ancestry Iowa Compiled Marriages 1835 - 1850 list Joseph Moulin and Sarah Goudy - 1 Jan 1846 Linn Iowa.

This database of Iowa marriages to 1850 contains over 21,000 names. Each entry includes groom, bride, marriage date, county, and state. Every name is indexed so you can search for one name, or two names that are linked. Advisable to check different spellings and combinations. Not every marriage was recorded.

Original microfilms can be obtained from the Family History Library.

Ancestry Iowa Select Marriage Index 1758 - 1996 list Joseph Moulin and Sarah Goudy - 1 Jan 1846 - Linn.  FHL Film Number 1710791 and Reference ID 2:3HN0976

Might be worth trying the e-mail link for this RAOGK volunteer in Linn Iowa to see if they can help.
