What's a family?
« on: Friday 25 May 18 15:26 BST (UK) »
I started off researching "my family"

But as my tree (and knowledge) grew, there came a point where there were so many ancestors, with interesting identities and lives, that "my family" became meaningless. The tree is too big, with too many surnames (or is that "family names").

So I don't think of it as "my family" anymore. I don't really have a name for it, but whatever it is, it's where I came from.

Anyone else feel this way?

I always called it family history and that is exactly what it is.... my ancestry is my direct lines however over the years in trying to solve my ancestry and find more information/clues I have research 'extended ancestry' so their siblings and even their partners families, at time because of how interesting their family lines were and they took me to research other records that my own ancestors would not be in and that gave me experience of different research methods.
So I have well research 'genealogy' of lines which are nothing to do with my ancestral line however all part of the history, life, times and people they interacted with/had knowledge of/were friends with of my ancestors

I still think of all mine as my family!  Someone may be a millionth cousin a million times removed - but they are still my family!

My daughter suggested that I should give my research the title
Whose fault am I?

(Oh, how I long for the good old days when children respected their parents - NOT!  ;D ;D

Philip, dare I say with a smile that lack of parental respect is a genetic trait?

How dare you, sir!

I worship the ground my mother walks on.  I worship that ground so much that I dug a hole ten feet deep outside her front door and carefully transferred the ground to a safe place to protect it.

Philip, rolling on the floor laughing my anatomy off is rarely possible these days, but my heart is in the right place.
