Help in Deciphering this name
« on: Saturday 26 May 18 03:44 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I've just found a bapt.in 1837 in the non-conformist records and it says Sarah (the mother)  was the daughter of "Edward  ????, Farmer, Uffington, Berks"
Can anyone please decipher the father's surname please?.

Best try and find a marriage of the parents of the 1837 baptism to see if (Sarah the mother of baptised child 1837) the brides maiden name look similar to the one your trying to decipher or surname of Edward.

Some possible surnames

(S or G or L) eanen eauen earen

Daren
Dauen
Danen

eg-

Gearen
Searen
Learen

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Well thanks for your help both of you.
I've been ploughing thru the bapts, marriages & burials for Uffington and nothing stands out.
In fact  there are very few "Sarah's" being bapt. during the period 1800 to 1825 and none with a father named Edward.
Also I can't see any lilkely marriages for Charles  Belcher & Sarah - perhaps that was also a non-conformist one.

Thank you all very much.

You've hit the jackpot with mother "Pumfrey" as that is where the Elizabeth Mary Belcher, who I was following, is located in the 1861 census with the "Pumfrey" family in West Shefford.
So its looking more than likely that the parents Charles Belcher & Sarah were also married as NCs

Sarah Belcher born 1837 is probably a sister, and  in the 1851 there is also listed a Sarah Warren Belcher aged 7 with Charles & Sarah.
Now to find the marriages.

Many thanks to all.
