can anyone restore cooper's yard photo - peterhead 1900s
« on: Saturday 26 May 18 10:05 BST (UK) »
this photo belongs to my Samuel side - Peterhead , I'm interested to see if its easier to establish who is who in the photo, unfortunately no info is recorded on the back and as generations pass, it becomes even harder to tell,

such a good group photo, wondered if anyone can help bring the best out in this old photo

many thanks in advance

ryan

This is a wonderful historic photo of the herring gutters at work.  I am not sure if you are aware, but thousands of these ladies followed the boats as the shoals of herring moved around. They started off all around the Scottish ports, moving down to Yorkshire and then down south to Lowestoft and other southern ports as the shoals moved.
A skilled gutter could gut 60 - 80 a minute. They worked in teams of three, the gutter, another who salted the fish and the third who packed them in the barrels.
I have cleaned up the photo, don't they all look happy, the smell must have been dreadful. By the way, they all spent their leisure time knitting, competing with each other who could knit the most elaborate pattern.

Ryan, Unfortunately there is very little to work with, for the men in the back row.  I have enhanced them as best I can, but I'm afraid it is not very good.
