Army discharge
« on: Saturday 26 May 18 18:29 BST (UK) »
I wonder if someone could help explain if on the vision test on joining up if 6/9 in both eyes is poor enough to be discharged, also what could a charge of "absent from tatto till 9 30 am, 11hrs 30 mins" mean , any suggestions very welcome.

Tattoo (or taptoe) is the time in the evening by which soldiers had to be in barracks for the night.  In this case it was 10pm and your man was noted not to be in at that time but returned at 9 30 next day.  He was therefore absent for which he would likely to have been charged.

Don't know about the eye exam I'm afraid.

Thanks so much that explains the TATTO !  the writing was not too clear . He was eventually discharged so I thought eye sight may have been the reason.

There are photographs online of British soldiers wearing glasses, so I doubt that eyesight (unless worsened by a wound) would have been the reason for discharge.  I haven't found any official Army guidance on this, but did find a photo online which I thought it would be fun to share:

Going off at a tangent perhaps but as you have his eye exam and a record of a misdemeanour, you are probably looking at his record.  Does it not say why he was discharged? If you'd like to post his details we could see whether there is something you may have missed regarding discharge?

PS Brilliant pic Phil.  I had thought of posting one where the doctor is saying "and now cough" but thought better of it.
