I've been researching a number of families whose members were variously involved in the beer brewing industry, estate agency, the legal profession, and cotton spinning.

These were the families Boddington (Manchester), Shaw (Leigh, Lancs), Pendlebury (Leigh & Ruthin, Wales), Bowden (Manchester), Lecomber (Ruthin), Eckersley (Atherton, Lancs), Tyldesley (Manchester & Ruthin).

It's the business interaction between these families which I'm mainly interested in. I'm guessing it's a long shot but I'd welcome any help you can offer whether anecdotal or otherwise.
(Generally, LEIGH, LANCS)

BOWDEN (Solicitors & Estate Agents)
ECKERSLEY (Cotton Spinners)
HIGENBOTTAM (Brewery)
LECOMBER (Engineer)
SHAW (Brewery)

Hi there

Sounds interesting.

I've researched a number of businesses for various reasons  I have Shaws but they are in Rochdale and above near Ripponden in Sinning and milling.  I've also looked at some companies while we were researching some families from further north and merchants in cotton etc led back to Manchester etc

I haven't got your families but I don't know if any of our resources are of use.

Have you used the British Gazette free online? (Bankruptcies, takeovers, etc), the British Library Newspaper library, (Free to search, short memberships, loads of adverts, etc, foreign and local marriages etc),

Hope you get some progress.

Best wishes

Emms :)

Thanks for getting back, Emms.

In respect of resources used, I have often delved into the (British) London Gazette. I also subscribe to the British Newspaper Archive (BNA) and have found it to be very useful. Add in Ancestry.com and Find My Past.com and that gives a full account of my subscriptions.

I have made some progress in that I have been approached by the grandson of one of the 'players' from the Welsh side I've been researching and he has supplied many names, dates and anecdotes which all add pieces to the jigsaw. In fact, our contacts have been truly mutually beneficial!

I'm expecting to find more when the BNA eventually publish various newspapers for the period 1914 to 1930. One grumble I do have about the BNA is that they won't give any indication as to when various publications might be released....not even a hint!  :(

Thank you for your kind wishes.

Cheers,

George Shaw.

Hi George

I'll find him  Unfortunately I've lost quite a lot of stuff because of moving but I know much of its on an old laptop,  I've a feeling I had a contact off these people once

From memory, Charlotte Ha;; married John Showler from Lincolnshire  They and many Showlers came to Rochdale  There daughter Mary Ann married Joseph Shaw.  Her sister Eliza married Mr Bowden.  Joseph was having children about 1860;s in Rochdale including John Cuthbert.

I'm pretty sure Eliza ans Mr Bowden were younger.  He might have been Henry/  I'll look it up.

Thanks for your reply

Best wishes

Hi George

Yes I have a few possible links in the area  A Shaw Solicitors in Manchester mentioned in a will for our Rochdale ones  Farm they were on has been a brewery at one stage  Just tiny suggestive links  Intriguing.

I'll keep you posted.
