Govan, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 27 May 18 16:26 BST (UK) »
I'm helping a friend with research but can't help myself going the 'extra mile'
I like to get 'into' the family, who they are, where they lived etc. to try to locate them at different times, get pics etc. if possible.

I have a family who were at addresses in Govan on BMDs/Census'

However, trying to locate a family after 1911, I checked VRs & found 2 possibles.

I did a 'Go ogle' search (from A to B) with quotes included for 2 streets...

"distance from Queen Street Govan to Brighton Street Govan"

The return match gives me a map with Brighton Street & Neptune Street  ::) ::)

I then checked for Queen Street & I see it does still exist i.e. can anyone please tell me why it doesn't show up in my search from A to B ???

Looks as if Queen Street, Govan became Neptune Street at some point. There are several Queen Streets in Glasgow.

Thanks Isobel,

I think I may have left the 'Govan' out when I searched for Queen Street on it's own, anyway having changed name does explain things.

Hi,

I believe that Queen Street, Govan become Neptune Street, Govan around 1930.  My wife's family lived at No. 26 and all births from 1910 to 1930 were listed at Queen St.  A 1933 birth was listed at Neptune St.

There is a site here:

http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-streetschanged1.html

That lists names of Glasgow streets that have changed name.

Best wishes

Hello,
Does anyone happen to know where Greenhead Avenue was in Govan?  I think it was renamed Burghead Avenue.
I can't find it on any maps.  I can see Greenhead Drive, but no Avenue.

Best wishes.

They were in the same area Greenhead Ave was renamed Burghead Avenue around 1930 (Greenhead Drive was renamed Burghead Drive) but it disappears from the Directories shortly after the renaming.

Found it on this map from the NLS

https://maps.nls.uk/view/109707890

Greenhead Ave runs parallel to Greenhead Drive, it ran from Langlands Avenue to Katherine Drive (and parrallel to Katherine Ave.)

The nearest on a modern map is Greengairs Ave but most of that area is post WW2.
