A Bit Worrying
« on: Sunday 27 May 18 19:04 BST (UK) »
I have a match on ancestry - our great gandmothers were siblings according to the paper trail.
But our shared dna is only 33 centimorgans. I would expect it to be much more.

What do you all think?

Take a look at the following link.

http://blog.kittycooper.com/2015/05/new-dna-relationship-statistics-from-blaine-bettinger/

According to this, 3rd cousins have been shown to share between 0 and 334 cM, average 89 cM. So it is not unheard of, but another possibility could be a grandmother adopting her daughter's child to avoid the stigma of illegitamacy. If there is a large difference in ages between the siblings it could be the case.

You are definitely connected to this match, so I'd tend to go with your paper trail. Have either of you uploaded to elsewhere to use a chromosome browser?

Thanks Margaret - I have uploaded my dna to the other sites.

The two sisters in question are the 2nd and 5th in a family of five, born 14 years apart.
The first born died in infancy.

I will suggest to my 3rd cousin that he does the same.

I particularly like the My Heritage chromosone brower

Have you found any interesting shared matches ?

I'm finding  My Heritage and Gedmatch the most useful to date.

All my best matches are on ancestry. Some different ones but not close on My Heritage.
I am disappointed so far with gedmatch matches. But it did get the colour of my eyes correct!

My dau in law on the other hand has many good matches on MY and Anc

No, not worrying at all.

Just checked out shared DNA between some of known 3rd cousins in my tree.  There are two 3rd cousins who share 90cM at Ancestry, but the sibling only shares 34cM with the same 3rd cousin.
