John Davies ( b 1840 Llanddeiniolen/Pentir)
« on: Tuesday 29 May 18 11:40 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can come up with an answer regarding the above gentleman's beginning and end, as it were. His details seem to be forever changing. He is to be found from 1871-1911 at Tan y Foel near Deiniolen, with his wife Elizabeth (Williams) from 1871 - 1891, and with his son-in-law and family in 1901 and 1911. In these censuses, his place of birth is given as Llanddeiniolen or Pentir (1911).
His marriage took place on 21/08/1863 at Llanddeiniolen (Even then, surnames seemed to have been initially switched). He gives his residence as Rhiwlas, and father as David Evans, farmer.
I think I can find him with his grandmother (Anne Roberts, 74 yrs of age, b Llanfairfechan) at Waen Pentir in 1851, but I've drawn a blank for 1841, and there is no sign of a church-registered birth. I can't find a farmer by the name of David Evans in the area either. In 1861, there is a John Davies of much the same age living in the Rhiwlas area, but giving his place of birth as Penmon. He is described as 'other relative' to a Robert Williams (60 yrs old, b Llanddeiniolen).
The twist comes in 1901. He is not easily found, but he gives his name then as John D Abram (sic), which suggests his father was a David Abraham.
I cannot find a burial or grave record for him or his wife in the Llanddeiniolen, Llandinorwig, Machpellah or Pentir graveyards. His children were called Ellen, Ann and David (his father in law was called David as well, incidentally, his mother-in-law Ellen). David went to the United States, to the slate quarries there.
I suspect an illegitimate birth and/or orphanhood soon after birth. I wonder if anyone has the time to cast new eyes, please ?

Hi
There is a John Abram who appears in the 1841 census aged 12 months. Living in Tanrallt, Llanfairfechan and in Tyddyn bach, Llanfairfechan in the 1851 census. His father was John Abram born c1807 Llanllechid initially an ag. lab. and then a quarryman. Mother Margaret born c1811 Llanfairfechan. The only trouble is that this John Abram was born in Llanfairfechan and not Llandeinolen and seems to disappear after 1851.
Which fact in your description is your original source?

Glyn
Jones - Penmachno/Blaenau Ffestiniog/Capel Garmon
Thomas - Abererch/Porthmadog
Evans - Llangelynin/Llanaelhaern
Jones - Pwllheli/Abererch
Brammer - Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire
Robb - London/Scotland

In order of certainty :
(1) The 1863 marriage record of John Davies gives David Evans as a father.
(2) The 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1911 censuses in Llanddeiniolen certainly give the same chap (John Davies)
(3) In 1901, he is named as John D Abram.
(4) In 1851, I think (but I am not sure) that he is with a grandmother.

I've not got anything else.

Llandinorwig burial book has
John Davies, Gallt y Foel, Llandinorwig buried June 14th 1913 aged 73.

Elizabeth his wife is probably
Elizabeth Davies, Tan y Foel buried April 20th 1892 aged 52 years.

They either had no stone or it is laid flat as they are not in the MI book.

WW1 military details available for their two grandsons John and Owen Thomas if needed.
