True, but Suzard's work earlier on the thread makes it look pretty clear that the husband died in 1877.

I don't think so.  It might mean Louise (father dead), born 1874

1863 - Thomas Henry PRESTON marries Nina Eliza THOMSON
1871 - Thomas PRESTON on census in household of George MARSH
1871 - Nina PRESTON not yet found on census
1875 - birth registered Louisa Elizabeth Woods THOMSON mmn THOMPSON
1877 - death of Thomas Henry PRESTON (cirrhosis, informant George MARSH).
1879 - birth and death of John George PRESTON mmn THOMSON
1880 - birth of Isabella Nina PRESTON mmn THOMSON
1881 - Nina PRESTON on 1881 census as widow with Louisa 6 and Isabella 1
1883 - birth of George Hilliard Reynolds PRESTON mmn THOMSON (Mar qtr 1883 Chelsea vol 1a p366)
1883 - Nina attempt suicide (by carbolic)

A child born to Nina before Thomas died was not registered as PRESTON.  Children born to Nina 1879 onward were registered as PRESTON - presumably to save embarrassment and as Thomas was not in a position to complain.  There may well be other children born between 1863 and 1879 we have not yet found, who were not registered as PRESTON.

The lodger was Rosina Gibson Weeks who married William Southwell in 5/6/1871 st Luke's Chelsea.

How do I reply to individual posts/questions???
Based on DNA matches, I believe Isabella's father is one of the sons of Stephen Baldwin (1804-1880).
Three of them are likely. George Baldwin immigrated to NZ very shortly after Isabella's probable conception date. I agree that Stephen is likely the father but find little information about him.
