I now have a very general reply for the NSW Registry.  Have you seen the online marriage etc.  I am now asking them should 246/26 be on the register if church record suggests the marriage did not take place.  I am now back in the queue.

Yes, perhaps ten more business days ... fingers crossed someone there will actually think it through and investigate ... and 'escalate' their informed response  :)

Fingers crossed

I hope they do look at it.  It is very disappointing.

If they respond with positive confirmation of the marriage, I will be interested in learning of their reference number  ;D  and I have put some pennies aside to order an official transcription for the 'new' reference number.   Of course, it is possible that the clergy's made a mistake in his register.  Perhaps the digitised entry is from the back up register.  C of E clergy are meant to use two registers concurrently, and store them safely but separately from each other.   I am fascinated with the alteration to the register's entry numbers, so too are my retired C of E clergy AND my retired Old Boys from NSW BDM ...  :)  All are familiar with handwritten registers and the inadvertent slips of pens ... this one is very intriguing, rare and much speculations are 'raging' in my older relatives.

ADD ... I share :  I married in C of E ceremony in NSW in 1970s.  FOUR times I signed during the ceremony.  Once in the civil register, (paperwork for NSW BDM), Twice in C of E registers (as per above) and Once on THE certificate, which was handed to me during ceremony. (It is the Bride's proof, but no longer accepted as proof of marriage for NSW legal stuffs)

I will wait and see what the Registry has to say if anything

I ended up getting 246/1926 and James Ryan and Florence Julia Woodford married 12 Jan 1926 at Chalmer Street Presbyterian.  I guess that is why it was on the other one with no signatures.
