Looking for the parents of Ann Read probably of Heveningham
« on: Wednesday 30 May 18 14:51 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help me to find Ann's parents?
I believe she was from Heveningham. She married Nathaniel Mayhew there on 12 Feb 1812 and died in Cotton, near Mendlesham in 1844.

I looked at the Heveningham parish register, although a William and Elizabeth Read were baptising children there about this time, I couldn't see a baptism for Ann.

Local newspapers (e.g. the Bury and Norwich Post, 19 Feb. 1812) announced the marriage of Nath. Mayhew jun. of Walsham-le-Willows and Miss A. Read of Hoxne.

The Suffolk FHS has indexed the baptisms of seven children of James and Sarah Read at Hoxne between 1780 and 1794, including Elizabeth and Ann, both on 26 Feb. 1783. The later entries give Sarah's former name, Stollery.

James Read married Sarah Stollery at Hoxne in 1779.

Thanks so much, what a wonderful piece of detective work. Do you possibly have the names and baptismal dates for her siblings?

Children of James & Susan Read baptized at Hoxne (Suffolk FHS index on CD - Deanery of Hoxne 1754-1812):

1780 John
1783 Elizabeth and Ann
1784 James
1787 Stephen
1793 Alfred aged 1 year 9 months (mother late Stollery)
1794 Matilda (mother late Stollery)

Best to check the original register for exact dates, rather than relying on a transcript of a transcript!

James junior appears to have married Ann Clark at Hoxne in 1806 and had two sons baptized at there in Sept. 1809 (Alfred, aged 1, and William, aged 2) before farming at Heveningham, where their son John was christened in 1810 (mother Anne late Clarke).

Burials at Hoxne include Sarah Read in 1827 (aged 71) and James Read in 1831 (91).

Thanks so much David, that's absolutely brilliant. I'm convinced you have found two of my 4x Gt Grandparents and their children.
