James Moore of Benfleet. Abt 1818-1896.
« on: Wednesday 30 May 18 15:56 BST (UK) »
James Moore was a sea captain from Benfleet, but he retired from the sea and went to Walton in Suffolk with his wife Charlotte and his three sons and two daughters and took over the Walton Ferry Boat Inn, often referred to as 'The Dooley'.
Can anyone help with his family I believe his father may have been a William Moore, born about 1775. I cannot find a marriage for his parents so haven't found his mother yet.
James Moore also started to run a four-in-hand wagonette passenger service to Ipswich: this was driven by his oldest son David  James Moore's other two sons' names were George and William, and the daughters were Charlotte and Emma. I have info about them. Many thanks.

The Essex Baptism Index (1538 - 1917) shows the following:

 James Moore

Baptised at St. Mary the Virgin 21/06/1818

 Residence - S. Benfleet

 Father - Abraham (Labourer)

 Mother - Frances

 Could this be your James?

Many thanks Jan. I think that it has to be more than a very strong contender.

 Hi,
I've just checked the 1841 census for South St. South Benfleet, which shows Abraham and Frances Moore living with their three children (Liensa, age 12, Meshack, age 6 and James, age three).

Two sons with the first name of James?   Unless James was this three-year old's middle name?

 Jan

If this is your man, then Abraham and Frances had James, Mary Ann d1822, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Louisa, Jesse 1830-1839, shadrach 1832-1836,Meshack george.
There’s a james of susannah Moore in 1837, but no more for Abraham and Frances. Susannah was born 1816 and was Abraham and Frances’s daughter. She died in 1838.

Many thanks to nannyj and Winslass for these leads. I have the family in S Benfleet and I know they eventually went to the Harwich area.

I think that the 1841 census shows the daughter as Lieusa (Probably a misspelling of Louisa). Can't find her on the 1851 census. I have seen a possible 1861 Cawston or Causton connection on a tree, but no firm evidence of a marriage. However, interestingly the Louisa was born in S Benfleet and now living in St Nicholas, Harwich. (District 3 Schedule No 138). Certainly a family connection to the town. Possibly marriage at Rochford 1850. with husband Isaiah Cawston/Causton. Any confirmation would be great. Thanks

That's wonderful cuffie81 thanks so much for all that wonderful info. Do you recommend Familysearch? I have never subscribed, but it does seem to have a good array of records and perhaps is better suited for UK research. I seem to keep coming up with dead ends on Ancestry now.
