FOSTER, DUMBELL and BRETTER surnames, Lancashire 1700-1900
« on: Wednesday 30 May 18 16:58 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I am a descendant of
Richard FOSTER,
b. 1796, baptized 1797, Toxteth Park St. James in Liverpool
and his wife Ellen DUMBELL, b. 1805, Hollinfare, Lancashire

Their daughter,
Elizabeth FOSTER,
born c. 1825 in Lancashire married
Richard Vincent BRETTER b. 1826 in Liverpool
They married in 1850 in St. Nicholas Liverpool

Looking for any connection with these families. Have not been able to take them back much farther.
Thank you

Hi sec968, welcome to Rootschat.

Why do you think Ellen Dumbell was born in Hollinfare?

It looks like she married again in 1847 (as Ellen Foster, widow) to Edwin Lees, a joiner. Her father is recorded as John Dumbell, a tailor.

Possible baptism in Wavertree per LAN-OPC:

Baptism: 29 Apr 1804 Holy Trinity, Wavertree, Lancashire, England
Ellen Dumbill - Daughter of John Dumbill & Elizabeth
    Born: 5 April

I'm also REALLY confused.  I show two marriages in the same parish of St. Nicholas, Liverpool:

1847 Edwin LEES and Ellen FOSTER
1863 Edwin LEES and Ellen FOSTER

Thoughts?

Yes the 1863 marriage is the same couple. So maybe the first marriage was legally invalid for some reason. This notation appears in the margin in 1863:
