What became of George?
« on: Thursday 31 May 18 20:09 BST (UK) »
George Smith b Inverarity 1878, parents James Smith 3 April 1828 -31 Jan 1903 and Mary Blues 1833- 3 June 1915 went to Canada after the Boer War, so I was led to believe. He appeared in the 1881 at 38 Lour Road, Forfar. He joined the Royal Horse and Field Artillery in 1901 and served in South Africa. His Service No was 14117. He was living at 19 Cotton Road , Dundee when he reported his father,
's death on 31 Jan 1903. On the "Passenger Lists leaving the UK 1890 -1960" I see a George Smith, Scotch age 27 Blacksmith leaving Liverpool for St Johns, New Brunswick. Canada on Ticket No 6541. Could this be him and what happened next?

Did he have a middle name? Shepherd (or variation)?

From the BC archives
http://search-collections.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/Genealogy

He seems to be in Winnipeg,Manitoba up until the 1921 census working as a blacksmith.

Just an update.

I looked at the marriage for George and Elizabeth on Scotland's People:

SMITH
GEORGE SHEPHERD
MCMAHON
ELIZABETH
1904
310/ 52
Monifieth

and it's definitely "your" George. Blacksmith-father James-mother Mary ms BLUES.

Hi Maureen,
You are a Star!
Sorry for the delay in replying to your first post which contains much useful information.
It looks as though you have found him.
I don't know yet where his middle name came from.
I will get back on the case later in the day.
Thank you once again.

I don't think the informant (daughter Margaret) on George's death cert was sure about anything!

Thank you Don & Maureen.
I now have a copy of George Shepherd Smith's birth image from SP confirming dob and parents.
I see from one family tree on Ancestry that  my George Shepherd Smith's parents are given as George Smith 1838 and Helen Sheperd 1839.
Now very interested to know where my George gets his middle name "Shepherd"
All help gratefully received.
