I do not know who the subjects are, excepts that it is someone in my maternal grandmother's family (Newman). A date might help me work that out. I don't have the original, so I can't say what was on the back. The photographer is Stanton, 134 Yonge St, Toronto.

Hi IJDisney:

You've received some very nice touch-ups.  If you are still interested in the photograph...

According to the "History of Toronto..." (which can be found on the internet), Eldridge Stanton originally had a shop on King Street East and in 1881 it was moved to 134 Yonge Street.

I was interested in your post as in 1881, a number of my ancestors worked in the neighbourhood; one in particular had a shop at 126-28 Yonge.  Should you not be familiar with Toronto research, I may be able to offer guidance.  Kind regards, Lisa

I do apologise to everyone for not responding earlier. For some reason the notifications for this thread get sent to a different inbox than all the other notifications from this site, and I didn't realise I had any responses.

Thank you all for your time and interest.

Thank you. I wondered if her hairstyle was rather peculiar. Is it cut in a basin shape, or could this be how it is tied back?

Thank you japeflakes, DrDude45 and McGroger for your photomanipulation wizardry. It is much appreciated.

It is really interesting how different effects bring out different parts of the photo - whether it be the background hanging, the carving on the table leg, the chair material and studs, the join in the carpet, etc... All those incidental features that I find really curious.

Thanks again.

PS - does anyone think that the item on the table is a partly opened fan, lying on a piece of paper?
