Quaker Tisdale/Teasdale?
« on: Friday 01 June 18 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hi
Im trying to trace my 7th grt grandfather William Teasdale/Tisdale/Tisdall but have come to a brickwall.

He firstly marries Hannah Wells 12 May 1763 Leicester/Scraptoft. William is given as 'Of the parish of St Mary de Castro, Leicester'
There seems to be no children for this marriage as far as i can see.
Hannah dies in 1767 and in 1769 William remarries to a Deborah Lane 12 Dec 1769  (I can not find a birth for her anywhere, Her burial gives a birthdate of 1748)
They have the following children
Isaac Lane Tisdale bapt Feb 1769 Leicester (Born before they married so is baptised under the name 'Isaac Lane' but uses Tisdale)
Hannah Tisdale bapt 1770 Leicester

Deborah dies 1820 but I cant find a burial for William.

The only other Tisdale in the area seems to be a 'James Tisdale' who is baptised 1722 Hinckley  and marries 1749 Peckleton.
This James is baptised as a Quaker son of Jeremy Teasdale of Norwich and Ruth Reckless of Nottingham.

I wonder if my William links into this family? Maybe a brother or Son of James's brother?

Hello Fenboy,

From my own experience with Quaker ancestors and based on what you have said; it seems that William Teasdale/Tisdale/Tisdall may not have remained as a Quaker.

Based on my understanding; members of the Religious Society of Friends aka Quakers did not baptise their children nor would a birth outside of marriage have been acceptable to the community.

It may be that I have misunderstood your comment re the birth of the child Isaac LANE so apologies up front if so.

I will send you a PM.

There are a handful of Tisdale baptisms on the non-con disc (LFHS); none of them matches your family names and there is very little other information other than that they were Quakers in Leicester. I think at least some of them will be from the Tisdale/Reckless families you mention.

      Tisdale   Elizabeth   yob  1720
      Tisdale   Elizabeth   yob  1763
      Tisdale   James       yob 1722
       Tisdale   Jemima      yob 1762
       Tisdale   John         yob 1759
      Tisdale   Joseph      yob 1727
      Tisdale   Reckless    yob 1724

I can't see any appropriate Lane baptisms and no relevant Tisdale burials.
