So now I know where Ancestry keeps their login server!
« on: Friday 01 June 18 12:50 BST (UK) »
Late yesterday evening, I lost access to Ancestry.

All of a sudden my search returned as though I was not logged in.

Attempts to log back in just returned an error of the "something went wrong" level.

This morning, I read that Amazon Web Services had a "power event" taking out some hardware in a datacentre on the west coast of the USA. This affected lots of organisations who buy into Amazon's "cloud".

The event took place at 15:13 PDT, which is 23:13 BST, just when I was dumped out of Ancestry.

You can read the story at https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/01/aws_outage/

Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Census information is Crown Copyright. See www.nationalarchives.gov.uk for details.

I wondered what had happened, I was using Ancestry, switched to FindMyPast and then couldn't get back to Ancestry.  Decided to call it a day and went to bed.  All OK again this morning.

Yes Ancestry knew you were tired so they switched it off to make you go to sleep!!   ;D

What this means is that Amazon does not run its "important" systems in parallel, so that if one fails, the other takes over without any loss of service.

That is how the Telstra system used to operate when they first went in for digital telephone exchanges, ALL the systems to get your call accepted and then routed to the destination were in parallel.

On my previous laptop there was an alarm reminder which would pop up at around 11.15pm with a message "Go to bed".  No idea whether it was built into the laptop or whether it was Google.  Haven't got it on this laptop.

Anybody still having problems with Ancestry ?

Well I can log in, but I'm now a "Registered Guest" and can't view any records until I subscribe, even though my sub was paid last week.

I've been told to 'clear the cache', but that's not working either - it logs me into the US Ancestry site and still can't view records.

They must be having some major issues after looking at a page on FB.
