Austrian Birth record 1852
« on: Friday 01 June 18 16:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Would there be a record of birth for my chap Adolphe Brunner b 1852 Austria to i believe James Brunner b 1821 Austria & Ann Tatham b 1831 Yorkshire? I can not find one in the British overseas birth indexes but that's because he father wasn't British i expect. Though his father did reside in the UK i believe he was a missionary so the family travelled.

Hope you can help.

Hi Alders,

I use http://data.matricula-online.eu/en/oesterreich/ to research my Austrian lot.

If you know the area you can look in the Parish registers. Bewarned the writing can be dreadful (well where my lot are from it is) and is usually in German, Latin or a combination there of.

I also host the FB group:

Hope this helps.

Nottingham census from 1881:
James Brunner, 60 y old,  missionary, place of birth Brody, Austria
wife Annie, place of birth Scarborough, Yorkshire
son James, place of birth Radcliffe-on-Trent

Brody was (is) a place in Galicia / former Austrian Empire. Nowadays Western Ukraine.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brody

70% of the population in Brody were jewish.

In this book you will find William Brunner (page 320), missionary and James Brunner (page 326), missionary both from Brody.
https://ia902604.us.archive.org/5/items/memoriesgospelt00dunlgoog/memoriesgospelt00dunlgoog.pdf

William and James went to England. William first. He converted to Church of England and started missioning jews. James arrived in England, converted to Church of England and then went to Paris as a missionary to evangelize the Jews.

Also in the Nottingham census from 1881:
Adolphe, 30 years old, teacher, place of birth Paris
wife Catherine place of birth Huddersfield
son George, place of birth Nottingham

This all seems to fit. Looks like Adolphe was born in Paris

While i was sniffing around i found a few documents that may help.

Dave

Wow, thank you so much for all of your help.
Austria is where Adolphe stated he was born when he naturalised though as you said in 1881 & 1871 he claimed Paris?  So i am a little confused as to where he was actually born!
Dave, on page 329 if refers to the pastor Adolphe Monod which i presume is where Adolphe's name came from.

Yes. I also think that the name Adolphe came from pastor Adolphe Monod.
Adolphe stated Austria as birthplace because his father was Austrian.

Being born in Paris was of no relevance ! he was Austrian :)

If you need any more assistance let me know

Dave

Address Book from Paris 1854.

http://adressbuch1854.dhi-paris.fr/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=Adressbuch_online.fp7&-loadframes

Search for Brunner, 3 hits.

the first one
Profession: Pastor at the evangelical church
Street: [rue de] Ménilmontant (present street name: rue Oberkampf) nr. 20
District: 8 (present number 11)

So now you know where he could have lived when Adolphe was born.

Thank you Dave,
I always thought that James was Wesleyan. His wife's father was Daniel Strickland Tatham a renound Wesleyan ministe

& her grandmother Mary Tatham who was quite devout. https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Memoirs_Of_Mrs_Mary_Tatham_Late_Of_Notti.html?id=oMUyLgEACAAJ&redir_esc=y

Adolphe married Catherine Tatham, they were cousins  (Catherine's father was the brother of Daniel Strickland Tatham).

I'm tracing the family history in the hopes that someone can give me a clue on how the widowed Catherine Brunner ended up taking in a rich unconnected orphan from Japan & raising him?!
