Looking for James Goodwin 1868 - 1958
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 07:01 BST (UK) »
He seems to have served in Roberts Horse and then in the Commander in Chief's Body guard as a Lieutenant and then he was transferred as a Lieutenant to Kitchener's Fighting Scouts
some how he seems to have managed to be back in England and married there 25 July 1900 to Lizzie Hines
There was an excellent article in the Cape Town Family History Society newsletter regarding him, but hoping some listers may have more knowledge about his service or where to find such?

He claimed that he knew Lord Roberts, Lord Kitchener and Cecil John Rhodes.
His sister in England, Aunt Bettie as she was known to the family, was connected to Alfred Beit, and given his connection to Cecil Rhodes, I wonder if it was this connection that saw him going from a private to a Lieutenant in such a brief period, and maybe supports his claims:
That he was ended up in Volksrust, running the town on behalf of the army until peace was declared.
Went to Rhodesia with Rhodes and being given vast tracts of farming land or finding the Wankie coal mines.

He died 1 September 1958, his residence was that of his daughter and son - in - law 74 Prairie Street, Rossettenville, Johannesburg.
The death certificate said he was born 27 Feb 1868 he was married in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, his wife died in June 1952
He had 2 children Irene Elizabeth Suckling and James Earle Goodwin

That is pretty much all I know about him.
Anything found will be a bonus.
Anything to substantiate or refute his claims.

Hi Rosie
Information on his life would be great, his father James Goodwin was born in Tasmania and went to London and was a publican, his mother Eliza Barber was a daughter one of the top pigeon purveyors in London, John Barber of Sclater Street
