I have tried to find the birth for the Edward Francis F GISSING b 1880 that mentions mother of SHELTON without success.  I have looked at FreeReg,  Free BDM, Anc & FindMyPast without success.

Where did you locate the record that mentions the SHELTON as mother please?

If you send for the actual birth certificate(s) that will give you the exact information as no baptism has materialised.

The 1902 or 1905 death if I recall one was the date of death and one the probate? **

** yes just checked date of death 31 Aug 1902 probate date 6 Jun 1906

Having said that I can't see 1906 mentioned apart from on the transcription.  Says he had effects in England £100.

Betsy is said to have married 3 times.    :o

To date cannot locate two of the said marriages.

Any clues as to who she married?  Is this in England?

hi Milliepede,

According to Betsy's death certificate she married three times.  The first was unknown and no issue.  The second was when she was 32 in Birmingham and issue was her son. There was no statement as to issue from her supposed third marriage which is understandable given she was 50 - 56 years of age.

Betsy was baptised Eaton, Leicestershire 9 Jan 1840 so a possible birth end of 1839 or early 1840. That would make a marriage about 1872  at Birmingham.

However the dates are suspicious. For example Betsy said she was 50 when she & Edward married however she was actually 56.  It was said she was 53 when she died however she was 59 years.  Her son Edward Francis was said to be from her 2nd marriage however his birth was registered as GISSING in 1880 at Newcastle on Tyne.

Thanks for your perseverance.

Hi Westy

Coming from a family of Nonconformists, Edward is unlikely to have been baptized in the Church of England. He married in a Roman Catholic church and his parents in a Baptist chapel, as announced by local newspapers:

The Suffolk Chronicle, 10 July 1841
MARRIED ...
Yesterday, at the Baptist Chapel, Eye, Mr. Gissing, draper, to Miss Sarah Ann Bishop, third daughter of the late Mr. J. Bishop, both of the above place.

The Bury and Norwich Post, 9 Feb. 1869
MARRIED ...
On the 31st ult., at St. Edmund's Catholic Church, Bury St. Edmund's, by the Rev. Edward M. Bird, S.J., EDWARD FREEMAN GISSING, Esq., only son of S. Gissing, Esq., of Eye, Suffolk, to EMILY MARY, eldest daughter of the late Sir CHARLES CUYLER, Bart.

Can't compute the 3 marriages for Betsy.  If she married Edward using the name Shelton and that was the maiden name registered on the birth of her son was that her birth name or a previous married name - nope can't untangle that one  :(

Hi David,

Thats a good point:  the thought had briefly occurred to me and I didn't follow through for no reason other than I forgot to go back.

Edward & Betsy married in Australia in the Primitive Methodist he seems to have continued the non conformist alignment.

Interesting that I didn't give it further thought until you pointed it out as it makes perfect sense.  I too come from a long line of non conformists so no excuses.   ;D

Hi Milliepede,

I too am unable to follow it especially as there are so many contradictions.
