Jane Symes formerly Millroy-workhouse
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 12:14 BST (UK) »
I finally got the birth cert. of George Thomas Symes (confusingly referred to as George William Symes on his Great War death plaque)
It shows his birth in Haltwhistle Union Workhouse,

13th April 1892

Mother Jane Symes, formerly Millroy- A housekeep (domestic) of Sunderland.

Well, I've spent an hour trying different spellings etc with no joy. Help!

This appears to be a follow on post, if you have a previous thread it would be really helpful to give a link to it so people don't waste time duplicating searches that have already been done.

Not sure I understand...I haven't asked about Jane before, I only got her name on a birth certificate in this morning's post.

Does the birth cert not name a father? Are you looking for a marriage, a birth, a census return for this lady? or all of these?

If you have details of her son, does she not appear with him on census returns / his service record etc?

We only have her name and where he was born. She is Jane Symes, formerly Millroy
He was illegitimate and born in the workhouse.

Neither of her names come up on findmypast. Tried using wildcards etc.

Eventually my Gt Grandparents adopted him. It would appear that he never lived with his mother.

This is a link to a previous post on this family.....
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=733762.0

.....Because the first thing we'd do on reading this new post is ask "where is George in 1901, 1911 - is he with his mother or other siblings etc"

The older topic has this information and more, saving us from time effort in duplicating what is already known  :)

Cheers

But because of other info we now know to be wrong, I have started a new thread.

I know all there is to know about George, it's Jane that I can't find further info on.

:)

This may, or may not be relevant but in the absence of any other definite info may be worth following up:

There is another Symes, mmn: MILROY birth on the GRO register,
Elizabeth, birth registered Q2 1890, Brampton District

I understand, but to help us help you - you should link the threads - even if it's just to point out information previously thought right, is wrong.

In order to try find Jane, we can only start at the beginning of what you know - ie: her  details on his birth record, and the next step after that is naturally seeing about finding them on the Census...and if you already know that, then letting those of us who are trying to assist know also, is appreciated   - be it that link to a prior post, or summarising  here.

All the information/background in the prior topic is wrong?  Or some of it? Tell us what is the wrong information - again, lest we spend time following the same wrong leads, or overlook a potential good lead.
