William Holland b 1785 Midgley & wife Martha
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 15:29 BST (UK) »
One of my brick walls - who was Martha?

William was born in Midgley in 1785 to James Holland & Susannah [Horsfield] & emigrated to Nova Scotia in the 1810s. His wife was Martha; their children were born Anna/Ann ca 1814 [d 1896 aged 82 in NS], Mary ca 1816 said to have been born in Essex died 1866 NS, all the following born in NS William 1819, Elizabeth 1820, John 1823, Thomas 1825, Joseph 1830. Martha died 24 April 1839 aged 48/49 [depending on newspaper].

I have never found William & Martha's marriage. Nor the baptisms of Anna & Mary which would help enormously. There is a marriage Wm Holland of Sowerby to Betty Whitely of Soyland in 1805 but can find no death of Betty to allow 2nd marriage to Martha & why would he marry in Sowerby not Luddenden or Halifax? I have put this on the West Riding board but actually they may have met & married when William travelled to whichever port to emigrate.

Can any one see any records that might help? Thanks in advance.

Josey

Josey,
I am not sure if I have responded previously, I am a direct descendant.
Hopefully we can help each other.  I have a MyHeritage site that you could view.
I live in Halifax, NS, Canada.

Hello Terry, yes we do know each other - your hospitality when I visited NS in 2011 with Mr Josey was most welcome. If I ever find out anything else about Martha and or the baptisms or Anna & Mary I will let you know. Josey is a nom de internet!

Thanks for the response and I appreciate any information provided.
Are you aware of this MyHeritage site, he has, so it appears, to have obtained quite a wealth of data. He appears to be back beyond 1000 AD

There are more non-conformists that you can shale a stick at in/around this area.

Did you check with https://www.cfhsweb.com/publications/church-records/ ?

why would he marry in Sowerby not Luddenden or Halifax?

Marriage(s) were at the Parish church (Halifax Town Centre). Information from Index.

Thanks PaulineJ, I did belong to CFHS a while ago & have many of their publications as well as having accessed their physical & web records. I see what you mean about the marriages all being at St John's Halifax. However, still looking for a death for a Betty Holland.

My, Terry, that is some tree  ;D ;D. Not sure why their Jasper Holland relocated from Leek, Staffs to Midgley, Yorks!! Also need proof that Susanna Hors[e]field who married James Holland in 1779 was born & had father Timothy in Northowram. I see some of the notes appear to be mine, so it looks like that tree is owned by someone & have shared with in the past, who has embellished what I sent with much unproven stuff. I see it had over 10500 people in it  :o.
