Michael Connor, Ireland 1856 to 1928
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 22:43 BST (UK) »
I would like to find out anything about my Gt Grandfather Michael Connor and his possible army career.
Michael married Anne Doyle at Booterstown, Co Dublin 28 November 1880 and on the cert is described as "soldier at Fermoy, Co Cork". His father is listed as Thomas a carpenter. He was living at Lr. Leeson Street, Dublin.

On the birth cert of my Grandmother in 1883 his is described as "army pensioner and coachman" then living at Lr. Leeson Street, Dublin.
For the next number of years he is described on the birth cert of his family as Groom or domestic servant. He died in 1928.

My guess is that he was in the army from about 1872 to 1880 when he married.

Where would I start to look for a service record?

Thank you very much for reply t mo.

I knew there would be a load of Michael Connor!!

My big problem is I don't know when or where he was born. I have just guestimated his birth year as 1856...going on age given on his death cert.

He was living in Lower Leeson Street on the day of his marriage but most of the houses in that area were always let out as flats one or two rooms so I don't know if he was from Dublin.

I will have a root in find my past.

The church record of his marriage gives his mother as Catherine and parents address as B Rock that is Blackrock so it's likely that is where he is from.
Number 2083

There is a Michael Connor baptised in Blackrock parish to Thomas and Catherine 20 May 1855, born 18 May

Thank you Sinann!

Why did I never think to look that up. I have the marriage cert record for yonks and never thought to investigate further when the registers came on line  :-[

Now I can go to the Blackrock parish registers to look for his birth.
They lived all their lives at Blackrock and I just assumed that was because Anne Doyle was from there ! Never make assumptions!

Thank you so much Sinann,

This is wonderful. Just when I think I have this family research cracked I realise I have a lot to learn!!
When I went back to my records the bit about the army service grabbed my attention and I hadn't realised that all the info I had on the Connor family was from so long ago when I sat in the GRO getting possible certs.

Glad it appears to be working out, maybe you can find a military record now.
