Query about wedding record
« on: Sunday 03 June 18 08:04 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have been trying to trace a wedding record however had no luck until I found one which matched a lot of elements however the name was not as expected.

I am looking for the record of Patrick Markey and Margaret Mitchell in/around 1869 in Dublin.

I have baptism records with these two listed as mother and father of all their children.

A possible father of Margaret is a Henry Mitchell-62nd regiment.
And a possible sister Mary Anne Mitchell.

Patrick was a painter by trade.

I couldn’t find any record for a Patrick Markey and Margaret Mitchell but did find one for a Patrick Markey and Margaret Curtis in 1869 Dublin. The weird thing is on the record her father is Henry if the 62nd regiment, Patrick is a painter and her witness is Mary Anne Mitchell.

Is this too many similarities to be coincidence? Is anyone experienced enough to have theory on if this is the Margaret I and tracing why her name would be Curtis on the marriage and Mitchell on all her children’s baptisms?

Many thanks Kate

Is Margaret a lot older than her sister Mary Anne and had a different mum (Curtis)  who died?

Or perhaps born illegitimately?

It occurred to me that it would be worth checking records for the 62nd Regiment to confirm Henry's surname.

According to https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/units/346/wiltshire-regiment
"The Regiment remained in India until 1847 and then garrisoned in Ireland until the Crimean War where it fought during the Battle of Sevastopol." So they were in Ireland from c1847 to c1854.

The National Archive has a few muster rolls from the Crimea, but for each one I get the message: This record has not been digitised and cannot be downloaded.

There may be information on paysites such as FindMyPest or Anxioustree (There are results for both CURTIS and MITCHELL on F-M-P, but I haven't got a current subscription to view them!)

Just having a look for the children, I can see two to Patrick Markey and Margaret Mitchell
Henry? 1872 and Patrick 1874 both are RC baptisms
The marriage is COI.
Patrick's birth cert, Margaret was the informant gives her name as Mitchell
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1874/03150/2155579.pdf

If they are the same couple do you know of any reason the marriage and baptisms are in different religions?

My first reaction was that she was married once before, and this is likely the marriage:

Name   James Curtis
Spouse's Name   Margaret Mitchell
Event Date   30 Sep 1860
Event Place   St. James, Dub, Ire
Father's Name   Thomas Curtis
Spouse's Father's Name   Henry Mitchell

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/New_Kilmainham/Albion_Terrace/1289569/

The mother and daughter are showing as CoI, and the sons as Catholic

Note - Margaret is originally from Co Tyrone
McClean, Kelly, Murray, Higgins, McAnulty (McNulty, Conalty, Kinolty), Morgan, Rafferty, McPolin (All Co Down, Ireland) Bowman, Hooper(Yorkshire)

Given the Tyrone reference in your post, there are a number of baptisms that might relate, for a Henry and Margaret Mitchell (her maiden name unstated), in Drumragh Church of Ireland parish, in summary:

- Margaret Mitchell in 1840, the address was 'Creevan', father Henry was described as a pensioner;
- James Mitchell in 1842, the address was Tamlaght, again father Henry was a pensioner;
- Joseph Mitchell in 1843, the address was 'Cavanaca' (Cavanacaw), father Henry was a farmer and pensioner;
- George Mitchell in 1845, the address was Tamlaght, father Henry was a farmer;
- Mary Anne Mitchell in 1847, the address was Kilmore, father Henry was described as a cottier.
