Vinegar Hill rebels
« on: Sunday 03 June 18 11:45 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find out what Patrick Hanrahan did to be sent to Australia.
He was born in 1784 and only 16 at the of the rebellion at Vinegar Hill.  He was tired in Loughrea Galway Co, found guilty and was sent to Australia for life on Atlas II in 1802.
The records I have just say he was a rebel.  Apparently his bother was executed but I don't know his name.
He settled in the Bathurst Area of New South Wales  - we have information about his life here.
I would be grateful for suggestions of where to look to find out what happened in Galway.
Thanks
Jan

There's a article about the Battle of Vinegar Hill here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Vinegar_Hill

There's a book and film called "Death or Liberty" made by Dr Tony Moore of Monash University which tells the story of these and other rebels, radicals and reformers exiled as convicts between 1788 and 1888.

The web page http://butlerfamilyhistoryaustralia.blogspot.com/2012/08/laurence-butler-ch2-butlers-trial_7.html quotes a source for the trial of Laurence Butler, citing "His record of arraignment is in the National Archives Ireland (Ref: 620/17/25: so it could be worth checking the NLI http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ to see what records they might have related to Patrick Hanrahan.

Alternatively, there is a book in which the name Hanrahan is mentioned (but I don't have further details):
POWER, Patrick C - The Courts Martial of 1798-9 (Irish Historical Press 1997)
- second-hand copies are available online, or there might be a library copy available.

His trial was in June 1800 at Loughrea, Gal,  as per his Conditional Pardon as indexed  in NSW Australia ...

Biographical Database of Australia has 13 plus entries for him.

Well that rules out the book "The Courts Martial of 1798-9".

As a further thought - is there any evidence Patrick was at Vinegar Hill?  There were 'pockets of resistance' in many places and Patrick might have helped in other ways than fighting in a battle (ambushes, hiding weapons, passing messages and so on) - not enough to hang him, but enough to have him transported.

I wonder if he was involved in the Vinegar Hill revolt in New South Wales ...  back shortly with the date which I think was 1802.

Add

Thank you all for the suggestions I will look at those websites etc. and the books by Patrick Power and Tony Moore.
My friend has most of his convict and later records from New South Wales but I am sure whether she has the Ticket of leave .  I know she was hoping to find exactly what he did but that may not be available or even recorded with so many others being tried..
Again thank you all for your time.

There is a Facebook page called 1798 Rebellion Casualty Database, might be worth a look.
