James Gilligan 1777 to 1832 Looking for his Naval Record
« on: Sunday 03 June 18 13:13 BST (UK) »
I did a post the other day on the General England board hoping to find his death at sea and was surprised to find James was born circa 1777. He is buried at Chatham Kent and married Mary Conor from Middlesex in 1814 on a Kent Isle. Baptisms for their children happened in Kent,  London and even Halifax Nova Scotia. In 1851 Mary is working at Rochester Kent for an elderly gentleman Captain George Belson  who lived from 1765-1855 and was in the Royal Marines.
What I am looking for is record of James naval career and a bonus would be to find mention of his birthplace or other genealogical info.

Hi

I think I've found him, but at the moment this record hasn't got his birthplace.

But it does I think have his death date - 1st May 1832.

He may have been a cook and last served on the Prince Regent

Where was he stated to have been born on the 1851?

Hi Annie

James Gilligan died in 1832 - if its the correct burial he was buried 5 May 1832 Chatham.

Although the above named gent in my first reply (by same name ) died 1st May 1832 his widow is listed as Ann ?

I'm puzzled - this guy married a Mary Conor - wonder if she was a Mary Ann ?

Apologies, brain diverted after reading about Captain George Belson forgot who I was looking for  ::)

Claire, I think it's very possible for the wife to be Mary Ann but using either?

It may or may not be relevant but a nephew (1818-1868) married 1845  and lived at Lowtown which is 8km from Mullingar Westmeath. Other names associated are Kinnegad, Balinabrackey and Balleighter. The link between the two branchs of the family is son James(William) who was born 29 April 1829 and whose descendants included the 3 Gilligan Cricketing brothers from the 1920's
Dang wet dog. I am going to be munted all day.

What I am looking for is record of James naval career and a bonus would be to find mention of his birthplace or other genealogical info.

A copy of James' naval service record should be included in the admission papers for his son John to the school at Greenwich, because an assessment of the father's service was normally required before admission.

If you're lucky, these same papers may also give James' date and place of birth/baptism. This particular file includes 6 documents, which is encouraging. As well as the school application form for the child, it should include the service record, the mother’s sworn affidavit regarding the child’s baptism, a transcript of the parents’ marriage record, and a statement from a local clergyman (and/or churchwarden) confirming that the child is a ‘proper object for charity’, or words to that effect.

The records are not online. You can request a copy from TNA using the link on this page ...

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13261242

ADDED - there are also school records for James jr and Ann.
