Hello,

Sorry, trying to keep up with all the helpful replies. Edward married Helen and had three children. One of whom, also Helen, is the mother of my friend.

Edward’s father, Arthur, appears to be the son of Edward McGowan (born County Armagh), and Margaret Cairns. Edward born around 1830, seems to have met Margaret in Kilmarnock. If there’s any truth to the link to culzean castle (I’m sceptical) then it must date from around this time.

Think Arthur survived after 1911 but then clearly didn’t make 100. That’ll teach me for trusting something on ancestry....

"Arthur, appears to be the son of Edward McGowan (born County Armagh), and Margaret Cairns. Edward born around 1830"

The death certs. will give both parentage including mothers maiden name (if the informant knew those details) for a few credits on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Trying to work out the name of the mother of Agnes McGowan Aitken.

Looks like Mrs Arthur? Little - may have to post on Deciphering board as I can't find a marriage for McGowan/Little or Aitken/Little to match?

William Brecken Aitken married Agnes  Donachie McGowan in 1899 in Kilmarnock. Agnes is listed living with a married sister in England in the 1911 census. She has two of her children with her, including Agnes Born 1900 in Kilmarnock. Agnes Snr is the one who died in 1938 ( age 62). Agnes jnr appears to have gone to Canada as Rosinish has found. Haven’t found a death for William B Aitken in Scotland so maybe he died in England too. According to 1911 census they  had quite a number of children.
