Birth query

Hi,
I have found my great aunts baptism in Potterne, which has my great grandparents  named as parents, then in the margin is parents and a woman's name, does this mean the child was hers and brought up by my grandparents ?

Is it a Catholic baptism? It could be her Godmother. Catholic records online, tend to show the Godparents/Sponsors but I notice CoE records don’t, although they would still be present.

Do the others on the page have extra names?

What is the year of baptism?

Do you have your Great Aunt's birth certificate?

Do you mean parents of your Great Aunt?  (Or who you believe her parents to be?)

If everyone in question is deceased, would you be willing to post the relevant parts of the baptismal certificate (which is presumably what this document is?) so we can see the names in context?

Added: I was thinking along the same lines as heywood regarding the extra names.

I cannot attach it for some reason , my great aunt Edith Cook baptism was September the 1st 1889 Potterne, parents  Ida and George Cook from Sleight Potterne Wiltshire,

It did not get attached by the look of it, there are other writings in margin along by other baptisms  too, i have just found my great aunts birth certificate she was born at the Workhouse Semington RSD, no name or occupation of father, although surname is Cook, my great gran as mother Ida Keene was not married at the time, so it seems she is the mother, also what got to me in 1891 census all the family have Smith down as surname, could it be some relivance or not?

If you look at the certificate the name Cook is her middle, the surname is assumed to be that of the mother, in this case Keene.

In an illegitimate birth a surname in the forename column is often a clue to the surname of the father.

So the woman's name in the margin of the baptism, has no relevance to my great aunt,

That is still a mystery, it seems strange they used the name Smith later. I wondered if George  had been born illegitimately a Smith and taken the name Cook on his mother’s marriage, but he was registered Cook, mothers maiden name Brothrock

You don’t say what date Edith was born, the baptism records she was four months old, so Ida and George must have marred very soon after the birth of Edith as they married on the 3 June the same year.

I have to go out so can’t look further now.
