Is this the same Arthur Jones?
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 10:10 BST (UK) »
These are two signatures made 22 years apart. The first is in 1720 on a  marriage bond of his daughter and the second is in 1742 on his will. One describes him as of Tetchill, Ellesmere and the other of St Martins (both Shropshire). His daughter and son in law were living St Martins and s in l was the sole executor. He was buried at Ellesmere in May 1743 and the will was proved in October 1743.

I think that they are in the same hand but there are some differences which might be accounted for by age.

I would appreciate any views of whether they are by the same person.

Thanks

I would say that it is the same man.  There are similarities in the forming of the letters.  I believe handwriting does deteriorate with age, but for me the similarities are greater than any possible differences.

I agree with Girl Guide, Gadget!

While some letters are a little different, most of them look very similar.
Best wishes, Judy :-))

I agree, same man.  In particular the 'e' in Jones is identical and the other letters are similar.

Thanks to you all.

I've only recently discovered the bond and will, which now confirms the line.  He's a puzzle -and a 9x grt grandfather. He has children baptized Ellesmere from 1680 to 1706, all have him as 'of Tetchill' but none mention a wife. Some online trees have the wife as Ann Oliver, but that family are in Berriew, Montgmeryshire in 1706 (when a daughter was also bpt in Ellesmere).

Now to search for the burial, pre 1742, of a possible wife - Mrs Jones  ::)

Thanks again for confirmation  :)

I'll just slip in a late "yes" if I may. :)

(as well as age, a thicker pen nib used on the bottom signature may also lead to slight differences in letter formation)
