Help with bride's surname please - Harberton, Devon 1748
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 18:30 BST (UK) »
Good evening and thank you for any help that can be given.

I have found the marriage of my wife's 6x great grandparents in Harberton, Devon and have attached a copy of the relevant line.

I would be grateful if anyone could confirm if the bride's surname is Marsh please or is it something else?

Many thanks,

Nic

Yes, I’d definitely say it is Marsh.

The use of a long ‘s’ was common then

I would tend to agree that it is Marsh -- but am slightly concerned about the middle 'r' - it looks more like an 'n'. However I can't think what else it could be but Marsh.

I've now looked at the filmed register of the page and this particular scribe alternates between writing an 'r' as he has done in Edwards -- and writing them as he has done in 'Marsh' -- so  my concern about the 'r' has been removed!!
