Degree Subject at Armstrong College, Newcastle around 1910
« on: Tuesday 05 June 18 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Does anyone know if it's possible to find out what subject a relative's degree was in from 1910ish?

I know from Thomas Finkall Blair's military record he studied at Armstrong college which was part of Durham University but in Newcastle and that at some point before he joined up he gained a 1st B Sc but I don't know the subject.

Does anyone know if there's a way to find out?

Thanks a lot,

Michael

Hi Michael
No idea, but I'd start with an email to Durham University to enquire.
They may or may not be able to point you in the right direction, but an email costs nothing and its worth a shot.

I asked about this elsewhere (cos I am nosey) and have been led to the following

http://reed.dur.ac.uk/xtf/view?docId=ark/32150_s1qn59q4027.xml

If you scroll right down that page to the section marked 'Related Material elsewhere' it indicates that the records for Armstrong College are held at Newcastle University with some attendance and practice records at TWAS.

Boo that is brilliant, thank you so much.

The trick now is to try and get in there as the opening hours are so restrictive for those of us who work.

At least I know there's information out there.

Thanks again,

Michael

Might be something in there? An email to Newcastle University Library may be an idea.

and, in case you don't already have it, the Roll of Service for Durham University is here:

and finally, sorry to do this in dribs n drabs,

http://memorial.ncl.ac.uk/explore/blair-thomas-finkall
indicates that he did teacher training at Armstrong and I have just noticed that in the Durham Roll of Service there is a Blair, T.F. but no degree mentioned by his name as there are for others?

That's brilliant, thank you so much.

I was in the national archives yesterday photographing his service record and it has a loose page included for education, it's hand written and is quite clear and says he had a 1st B Sc written exactly as I've put it.

Hopefully I'll find something back at home in TWAS as you suggested.

Thanks again for all you help,

Michael

Hi Michael

I have been researching a relative of my husband's and find that she too had a degree. If you have progressed with this I'd be interested to know if you got any info from the University or if you tried the archives.

thanks

Boo
