Good afternoon,

Correct Tony, oct 1915 to be precise.

This has to be 1921 to 1922 to fit with issue of medals and demise of the MGC. I doubt he enlisted post war, 3 years would be a little short to achieve staff sergeant in peace time. So he must have had war service somewhere.

Still looking to see what MGC units did home service only, I would have thought they were all needed on the front line.

Added, sorry but missed out the 14th in the start date.

Could the WO2s 1st medal be the DCM???

Could be, the dark centre stripe between two only slightly lighter stripes could well come out looking like one colour on a BW photo.

That said, the left and right men don't seem to come into this anyway.

Quite right. Can't imagine where 1917 came from.
Happy to be corrected.

Back again,

Only the 200th and 201st companies may not have gone to France as far as I can see. But not a definitive answer by any means.

Thank you for all your help. It seems he could have been 41 in the first photo then and 47 in the second...I suppose it could be possible, what do you all think?

How do I find out if he could have done home service?

He would've been younger in 2nd photo when he was a Corporal ?

If he hasn't any medal card that would probably mean no overseas active duty. You could try and find any absent voters list wherever he was from that may identify his number?

Thanks Ady, apologies, I posted the photos the wrong way round, by the first photo I meant the one where he is younger and a corporal. I’ll try absent voters list as you’ve suggested - Update, I’ve tried this on Ancestry and he doesn’t appear
