Maria Edwards who married in Twyford in 1918
« on: Wednesday 06 June 18 22:16 BST (UK) »
Hi I have had no luck in tracking down a Maria Edwards who married my Gt uncle, Russell Bloomfield, on 13 Sep 1918 • Parish Church Twyford Southampton. (From WW1 Army Service Record)
Ancestry says Winchester, but perhaps this is the diocese?

I know that they had a daughter Daphne Maria born abt 1920 in Tendring registration District, Essex

Russell was born in Walton, Suffolk, in 1891 and was in the Army 1915 and was severely wounded 1916, requiring 66 days in hospital. Feb 1918 commissioned in Tank Corps. Other than that I can't find where he died, but may have been East Africa. I know next to nothing about either of them, but do know about Russell's siblings and parents. Any help eagerly awaited. Thanks

How old was Maria when they married?

Was she a widow or a spinster?

What was her fathers name?

Does Daphne's birth cert show him as a serving soldier?

I have just looked through his service record for WW1. Maria may have lived in Alswitha Terrace, Winchester when they got married. She soon moved to Felixstowe to Russell's father's house. This was while he was still serving. Maria had been asked to send the marriage certificate to the army and they had lost it There were letters from her asking for them to find it and return it to the address in Felixstowe. Other than that no clues. Hopefully the only evidence I have is attached. My computer started an update in the middle of my post!!!

Sorry Carole, I don't know her age, whether or not she had been married or the names of either of her parents. Just that they married in 1918 and according to his papers, in Twyford. There's no guarantee that she was originally from Hants. May have also been on some kind of war service?? Just that the marriage is Hants.

Since Maria was 91 when she died in 1985 this gives us a ca.birthdate of 1893/4 - since we know her mothers maiden name was Roberts I searched on the GRO index and just one with name of Maria Edwards comes up with these details in Sept.qtr.1893 Cardigan.   However, I appreciate that being born in Wales and with these surnames it will be hard to identify with family on a census.
