Hello Aussie experts
I just recently found a reference on FindaGrave for a cousin of my dad's, Elsie Covington Hall. She was born in 1900 in Worcestershire, daughter of John (*see below) and Agnes, and died in Lithgow, N.S.W in 1951 unmarried. Her death notice, found on Trove, states that she emigrated to Australia
as a child, and was survived by her sisters Mrs. E.R. Ison of Delemgra (Maggie), and Mrs. G.A. Atkins (Alice) of Malvern Street (as well as a brother in Kent, U.K.).
Pall bearers included nephews with surnames Wootten, Stedman and Atkins, all nephews of Elsie.
Alice was born in 1890 and married George Atkins in Kings Norton, Worcestershire, in 1911. I found one son Arthur b. 1913. who later married in Lithgow.
Maggie was born in 1894 and married John Thomas Long in Nuneaton in 1913. Found one daughter Maggie junior b. 1916. He died in 1928. I can't find a married Long - Ison either in England or N.S.W.
There were two other sisters, Mary (1886) and Lucy (1892) who I haven't found in Australia, though they could feasibly be the wives of Mr. Wootten and Mr. Stedman, and both deceased by 1951.
The two sisters Maggie and Alice are both in England as late as 1913/16. Their mother died in 1924. So is it likely that whoever provided the information to the newspaper simply made a mistake about Elsie emigrating as a child? Or did she travel with someone else?
And as a side note, can anyone find evidence of Mr. E. R. Ison, please?
* As another side note, Elsie's 'father' died in 1898 so unless her mother had the longest pregnancy on record, John Hall was not her father. The family lived in Coventry for many years, where Covington is a fairly recurrent surname. I reckon this is a clue
Sorry about the essay and thanks in advance for any help with finding the passages of these sisters.
Bev.
