OK! Here is an enlarged picture showing his collar and sleeve more distinctly. It's not a great photo but perhaps you, Alan, or someone else, can make a guess at what is shown?
Condick; Bull (Herefordshire only); Layard; Wilmot; Southgate; Fowlie (Singapore branch); Usher (Dundrum); Kelley (Lancashire);

Do you know his wartime address (preferrably 1918/19). He might be in the Absent Voters.

(He is not in the AVL at 5 Aberdare Rd, Abercynon, his 1911 census address from the info you ave provided)

Hi Gwil (nice to see some Welsh help coming in, it's probably sorely needed!)

Literally all the information I have on him has already been posted except did I mention he married (or possibly just lived with) his aunt by marriage? I have looked for both his and her deaths but haven't been able to identify them with certainty (yep, too many Thomases in Wales) ...

Best wishes
Queencorgi (Welsh blood on both sides!)

Assuming that was in the Army in 1901 then if he was still in Punjab there are 3 cavalry regts he might have been in:

PUNJAB-
3rd Hussars, Sialkot
9th Lancers, Rawalpindi
12th Lancers, Umballa

Again we are back to the 9th or 12 Lancers!

The family at 5 Aberdare Rad, Abercynon look to be them in the 1911 census. At that address in the 1918 Absent Voters is Trevor Williams who was 57692 in RAMC. I have looked in the Abercynon (polling ) district for W E T but not come across that name. I'm afraid it's not feasable to go through the whole Aberdare Constituency (> 6000 names)

Thank you Alan and Gwil!

There is just so little to go on that I think this topic has probably run its course. Most grateful to everyone who took the time to contribute to this thread ... I shall go back to hopeful family members and disappoint them ... you can't win them all and RootsChat has in the past been absolutely fantastic at finding unexpected ways round an obstacle.

Very best wishes

I would post the family photo on the Great War Forum in the uniform section.  I think it's pre-war but they might have an idea.

I did, Alan, it was my first idea, but have had no responses at all!

Well in my opinion he is most likely to be a 12th Lancer (may be 9th) who was is in India is the late 1890s and then came back to UK as a Sgt after service in S Africa 1990-01.  He returned to a job in the mines and was unlikely to be in WW1.
