I've come across a photo of a Thomas Potter on the National Library of New Zealand's website and would appreciate opinions on date taken and age of the gent. Link below

1860's. The date range from them is 1870-89 which I assume is when they were in business. It could be as late as 1870 but not any later.

Thanks jim1 :)

I've found some more from the studio that have the same floor and props, and a wider date range.

The Bolero jackets of the boys was a popular style in the 1860's.
By 1870 lens technology had advanced & the subject could be snapped a lot closer than this without the floor showing so in the 70's you see what's called the 3/4 shot.

Going by the length of beard and the lack of facial wrinkles I would estimate 30-45 yrs old.

Thanks everyone, it could well be my Thomas Potter who was born Tasmania 1837, possibly migrated to New Zealand by 1865, and married to widow Elizabeth Ann Arrott Johnson (nee McComish) in 1873, Wanganui.
