Civil War - WADDELL
« on: Saturday 09 June 18 12:12 BST (UK) »
According to a newspaper article published in the Kalgoorlie Miner (Western Australia)Thursday 2 October 1924:
Hope Masterton Waddell was born in Ireland circa 1841.
He travelled to America with his father (Rev Hope Masterton Waddell) in early life
He served in the American Civil War and was injured in Gettysburg, and attained the rank of Corporal.

I can't find him on the US National Parks website with links to the men who fought in that war. Does that mean it isn't true or I am not looking in the right place?

He died in Esperance, WA, in 1924.

From records I've read it would appear that Hope Masterton Waddell, born c.1841 travelled to America with his father James who was the brother of Rev Hope Masterton Waddell.

Looking at the 1860 census for Brooklyn this would back up the details above.

OK Thanks JJen, my mistake.

But it's whether he actually served in the Civil war that I need to know?

Sorry for the delay in responding, but my library was having some issues with being able to view, FOLD 3, a military repository.  Finally got into it today and found nothing in the Civil War records relating to Hope or Masterton Waddell.  The only entry was the 1860 census record.

I was confused about Esperance, WA, because the state of Washington uses the abbreviation WA too.  Too bad he didn't die there, because it probably would have been easier to find an answer.   ;)

He apparently registered for the Civil War draft in Brooklyn in June 1863 as Hope Waddle.  He was age 20 as of 1 Jul. 1863, white, occupation - drugs, unmarried, place of birth - England.  I can't read his residence, but dittoes were used to the address given for a Louis Winterbottom.  Even if Hope got drafted, which he may not have been, it seems like a big leap to go from draftee to colonel in the span of less than two years.  Perhaps he was telling tales to the folks in Australia.

In the 1865 NY state census, Hope M. Wadell appears to be back in Brooklyn as of 7 Jun. 1865, which was shortly after the end of the Civil War.  There is a column on the census for people who are or were in the Army or Navy, and none of these boxes were checked for Hope.

Thank you Genealiza and Shellyesq, that is very helpful. It just didn't seem right!! That age of Hope Waddle pretty much fits the bill, although he was supposed to have been  born in Ireland, but that's no big deal.

He wasn't referred to as a colonel in Australia until the early 1890's, a decade after his arrival in the country.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it :)

Just a quick note Shellyesq, could you please let me know the details of where you found the information so that I can reference it correctly? This is for a local history book :)
