Jemima Salmon - a colour request
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 12:34 BST (UK) »
This is an image of my great aunt Jemima looking somewhat sad/wistful - I'm hoping someone will want to add some colour to this photo to cheer her up. A B&W restore would also be much appreciated.

Keith

Thanks so much Tony for both the colour & B&W versions - these will make a nice little set alongside the original. Your work is much appreciated.

Hi Keith, yet another wonderful portrait!  :)

You really do have some great photos!

I'm not a great one for colouring and I usually leave it others. But I did have a crack at this portait. I hope the yellow dress cheers the photo up. BTW, IMHO any photo that expresses some emotion (happiness, sadness, wistfulness, etc.) is always much better than a posed 'formal photo' that expresses no emotion. I don't know where you get your photos from but the photographers were excellent in terms of composition, capturing fleeting expressions, etc.

I'd always imagined that 'composition' and 'capturing expression' were relatively recent 'photography skills' to be developed. It's wonderful to see that photographers of 100 years ago possessed exactly the same skill - in addition to getting the exposure right (without a digital camera) and developing their own film  ;)

Hi Mike - I'm so glad you went for the coloured option - I think the result is excellent. IMHO you should definitely consider doing more colour versions.

As you say it's interesting to see a portrait with some expression.

I have been very lucky with my family photos - virtually all the ones that pre-date the 1940's have been supplied by relatives. Up & until recently I had very few older family photos on my maternal side but following a recent visit to an elderly cousin who has no other 'close' living family she insisted on gifting me her family album. The quality & variety of the photos has been amazing & it's great to be able to enhance the original image with the restored & coloured versions provided by yourself & the other talented people on RC.

Thanks again for your work on this one.
Keith
