Barbara L. COCKS, born 31/07/1928, Cowbridge
« on: Sunday 10 June 18 21:51 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Barbara L. COCKS, the daughter of Albert Longfellow COCKS and his wife, Elizabeth, was born on 31/07/1928 probably at 3, Broadway, Cowbridge.

She married Arthur H.J. BUSH in the 2nd quarter of 1947, the marriage being registered in Bridgend.

Can anyone help with other details for this lady, please, including two younger sisters (one possibly Irene?)

Thank you

Tony Cocks

On FreeBMD there are 7 births for Cocks children registered Bridgend 1920-1934 with the mmn Miller.
There are others but not in the Bridgend reg dist. There is a dau I born 1934.
I see Albert and Elizabeth Miller married in June 1/4 1915 Cardiff reg dist.
They are on the 1939 register with a son Horace born 1917, a dau Florence V born 1920, son Albert Y 1924, George F 1926, Barbara L 1928
There are also 2 closed records.

Hello crisane and suzard ,

Thank you both for responding to my enquiry.

My real quest is searching for parental details of my father, Alfred COCKS, born 05/04/1911 in Cardiff and supposedly the oldest sibling..........recent investigations, however, have thrown serious doubts upon that supposition.   I know from my childhood that he was particularly close to the last three children of the family, Barbara, N/K and possibly Irene, who I think lived in LLantwit Major after she was married.

I was hoping that a descendant of any one of these three children would respond so that I could ask about my father.

Suz:   Your comment about the "other sister" is intriguing, especially your reference to FreeBMD of which I have no knowledge, only FreeREG which produced no results :'( ???

For the moment,

Tony Cocks

Alfred was born before the 1915 Cocks-Miller marriage - is this his birth registration?

Hello AVM228,

It is thought my father's birth was registered in the West Cardiff Sub-District on 05/04/1911 showing Bessie MILLER, a Domestic Servant of 4 Daniel Street, Cardiff, as his mother, but NO father.   Was this the Elizabeth MILLER who later married Albert Longfellow Cocks??   Incidentally, there was a daughter, Beatrice, born out of wedlock to the couple in 1915 but she was registered with the COCKS patronym.

Registered on 5 April 1911 or born that day?  Do you have the certificate?

Was the birthplace also 4 Daniel St (as well as Bessie's residence)?

A birth out of wedlock in 1911 would not normally include the father's details unless he attended the registration or the registrar was led to believe that the mother was married.

Have you traced the candidates for Elizabeth/Bessie Miller in Cardiff in the 1911 census?

It was taken on 2 April 1911 so she should not be all that far from the birthplace one would think.

I see from later records that Elizabeth Cocks cited her birthdate as 28 August 1892.

Ah - it looks as though Bessie Miller is already a patient in 1911, surrounded by unwed mothers and babies but not yet having had her own baby - have you seen that?

Free index details: she is 18, born Cardiff, enumerated in the West Cardiff subdistrict of Cardiff.

By inference it looks as though she is in the workhouse infirmary.
