British Soldiers in Ireland for 1901 census
« on: Monday 11 June 18 10:17 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have my great uncle's military records, he was with the Royal Engineers, and it looks like he was stationed in Ireland in 1901 and 1911. I have been able to find him boarding with a family in the 1911 census but can't find him in 1901. If he was living on base would he show up, can't find him in the English census either.
Youthed, Crook, Small, Bett, Finch, McClay, Clover, James.
From my husband's side Bailey, Talliss (or Tallis) Sayers, Hall, Stimpson.

People in institutions such as hospitals, schools, gaols, etc. were listed by initials rather than name so see if you can find him in 1901 that way.

Thanks, I'll try that, I found him in Barracks in England in 1891 which was neat to find.

If you can't find him that way post his name and age and we'll try.

It rather looks as if he might have missed the 1901 for some reason.  According to his medical records he was at the Curragh in May 1901 so may have been there on 2 April 1901.  While many of the census returns do show only initials, the RE Barracks was an exception but he doesn't appear on it:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000911093/

Of course he may not have been at that barracks, these are the other Curragh barracks for you to skim through.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kildare/Pt__of_Curragh_military_camp/

If he was in Cork then the barracks were in Ballincollig and there they were enumerated by initials!

(If we are not talking about Thomas Small - ignore all of this!)

Yes Thomas Small, ordance survey with the Royal Engineers. I think I may have found him, the only two things that don't fit are the age and religion, he lists himself as Church of England in the 1911 but this one says church of Ireland and has his age as 37, whcih is why I didn't find it to start, but if the 7 is actully a 1 then I think we might have a winner what do ya'll think?

Church of Ireland is Epsicopal same as Church of England. Age could be off as census was filled out by head of household.

Age is written as 37 but as Aghadowey says head of the household could easily get it wrong.  There wouldn't be that many Thomas Small Royal Engineers floating about Ireland.  The other lodger is from the Ordnance Survey which nails it for me.  Thomas an RE surveyor and a civilian from the OS doing their thing in County Cork.  Well done!
