Richards and Morgan family of Bristol
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 05:29 BST (UK) »
Hello Listers
It has been some years since I blew the research dust off on this ancestor.   ;)

Her name is ANN MORGAN bc 1836/38 Bristol.
My findings have her chr 1836 Bristol St Thomas to parents John Morgan and Mary Richards.

In 1841 census Ann is with her Grandparents Joseph and Ann RICHARDS in Bedminster whilst her parents John and Mary MORGAN are in Bristol St Thomas with older brother William.

Her grandmother Ann Richards dies, I suspect in 1843 Bristol St Thomas.
Her grandfather Joseph Richards dies, it appears in 1868 at Stapleton - Workhouse?
Her father John Morgan dies 1866 - Bedminster.    Workhouse?
Her mother Mary Morgan dies 1854 Bedminster (unconfirmed)
And I suspect her siblings were dying!  :o

John and Mary had a brood of kids but after 1851 census they are difficult to find.
William Lutley b 1831 (assumed died young no mention on 1851 census)
Ann b 1836 (immigrated to AUSTRALIA on 1841 and 1851 census)
Joseph Richard b1841 (assumed died young,  no mention on census' at all)
Victoria Louisa b1842  (somewhat researched - ALIVE)
John b1846 (researched - many descendants but no actual info of early life)
Joseph b1848 (untraced after 1851 census, assumed died young)
Charles b1849 (noted in 1851 census, poss 1861 census has him at St Augustines Colstan Hospital for boys)
James b1851 (unconfirmed to this family but 1861 census has him at St Augustines Colstan Hospital for boys)

I gather Ann's family were destitute and in a dire situation.   :(

Back to Ann
Ann would have been about 18yrs old when her mother died and could have stepped up to raise her younger siblings?   Poor House?

In 1858 Ann departs England (ship Golconda) to arrive in Sydney, Australia on 21 Oct 1858.
Described as 22yrs, single, born in Glouc, General House Maid, R&W, CoE.
She settles and names nearly all her 6 illegitimate kids after her siblings!

Can anyone help or refer me to any Workhouse records?
Is there any information re Bounty Immigration schemes out of Bristol to Australia?
Who paid for passage and to whom was she assigned?

All we know is she was in the Sydney district.
Known residences were renting from a Joseph John Richardson, Palmer Street, Sydney c1860s  and
Mr Hyam in Taylor Street, Sydney c1864ish

Thanks in advance
Rosalie

In those days, Bristol was either a county on it's own (The City and County of Bristol) or considered as part of Gloucestershire.
Bedminster was in Somerset.

Bedminster workhouse (built 1837-1838) was in Flax Bourton.

The former Bedminster poorhouse was (apparently) near to the Red Cow Inn, Bedminster.
Surviving records are at Somerset Heritage Centre, Norton Fitzwarren, Taunton.

The history of Bristol workhouses, and the Bristol Corporation of the Poor, is here:

Records of Bristol workhouse were virtually all destroyed by enemy action in 1940.

General Register Office website search

possible two more children of Joseph & Ann RICHARDS

Mother's maiden name: RICHARDS

1851 : MORGAN, Martha Charlotte - S Quarter in BRISTOL, Volume 11, Page 187

1852: MORGAN, Mary Ann - S Quarter in BRISTOL, Volume 06A, Page 5

---

The Charles H MORGAN in 1861 at St Augstines Colstan Hospital could be Charles HOLE MORGAN - registered 1849 Bristol - as Charles MORGAN 1849 mother's maiden name RICHARDS isn't registered with a middle initial H.

However there is a Charles HOLE/HALE MORGAN christening at Bristol parents: John MORGAN and Mary and a Mary Ann MORGAN christened at Bristol 16 October 1853, parents John MORGAN and Mary Ann.  Too many MORGANS!

Hi Capetown
More children to John Morgan and Mary Richards!
More and more kids seem to pop up.   Thanks for looking them up.
Yes too many MORGANS with the same name!
One thing I did notice is Mary was consistent as the mother not Mary Ann.
I can't say for sure if the two boys Charles and James at Colston belong to John and Mary Morgan.
The genie hunch tells me that John and Mary left their family destitute and these kids seem to fit the bill.   With records so sparse it is hard to connect the dots.
More research to do.
Thanks for finding Martha!

Probable death for Joseph

RICHARDS, JOSEPH       84
GRO Reference: 1868  J Quarter in CLIFTON  Volume 06A  Page 102

You could have a look on the GRO website for other deaths as you get ages at death given on there. You could narrow the results by entering either Clifton, Bristol or Bedminster in the registration district box.
