Convicts and marriage
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 08:55 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

A general question if I may  ;)

Did convicts who had their Certificate of Freedom have to get Government permission to marry?

I believe the ones that had a Ticket of Leave did need permission, (is this correct?).

Thanks for any help,
Marlene

Once they have their Certificate of Freedom, or their Pardon (Absolute, Conditional, etc) they are no longer a convict, as the document emancipates them.  They do not need permission of the governor to marry.

 :)

ADD, while still under sentence, whether holding a Ticket of Leave or otherwise, they needed permission of the governor to marry.
