James McKay
« on: Tuesday 12 June 18 17:14 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for information on James McKay soldier in 1850's ?
Possibly Black Watch/Lancers.
Father of William McKay 17th Lancers died 1893.
According to William's marriage certificate James was deceased in 1872.
I'm looking for a birth date/place nationality and wife's name nationality etc.
Many thanks in advance.

fb22 -- did William die in Scotland?

If so you could check his death certificate on Scotland's People website. You will need to purchase a few units but you could view the certificate on line.

It should give you his wife's maiden name, and father and mother's name. That may help find his baptism in the Parish Registers, assuming he was born before 1855 when Civil Reg commenced.

At the moment we don't know where he died or how old he was at death (if you know that -- it would help as it would give an approx birth year).

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Referring back to your previous thread re Thomas Browne

Are we looking at William McKay, Soldier, father of Elizabeth McKay who married Charles Curran in Dublin in 1897?
One of the witnesses on the marriage certificate of Charles and Elizabeth was Edmund McKay. Probable for him in both 1901 (age 18) and 1911 (age 28)  Irish census son of Kate/Catherine, place of birth India.
Familysearch have 1882 birth in Poona Bombay of Edmond McKey son of William and Catherine. Also an Emily McKay born in 1885 in Poona to same parents.

As already found for you by Dundee on an earlier thread

William actually died in Dublin. It was his son James who was living at Kensington Palace Barracks. There is a later amendment to the certificate indicating he was, in fact, not a widower as his wife Catherine ( nee Looney) was still alive.

IsobelW --- what a star you are for coming up with the previous correspondence about this case.

Thank you. I would have been rooting around the Military records on FindMyPast next -- you have saved me a job I had given myself! Thank you.
